Frequently Asked Questions
What is Google doing?
Google is planning to build and test
ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations
across the country. The network will deliver Internet speeds more
than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today
over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections.
What would that mean for me?
Imagine sitting at a local hospital,
streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the web and
discussing a unique condition with a specialist in New York or
Tokyo; or downloading a high-definition, full- length feature film
in less than five minutes; or collaborating with classmates around
the world while watching live 3-D video of a university lecture.
Universal, ultra high-speed Internet access will make all this and
more possible.
What might that mean for my business?
Google’s goal is to encourage people
to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better, and
faster for everyone. Here are some specific things they have in
mind:
-
Next generation apps: They want
to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds,
whether it's creating new bandwidth-intensive "killer apps" and
services, or other uses we can't yet imagine.
-
New deployment techniques: They
will test new ways to build fiber networks; to help inform, and
support deployments elsewhere, we'll share key lessons learned
with the world.
-
Openness and choice: They will
operate an "open access" network, giving users the choice of
multiple service providers. And consistent with our past
advocacy, we'll manage our network in an open,
non-discriminatory, and transparent way.
What would this mean for
entrepreneurship in Orlando?
In the same way that the transition
from dial-up to broadband made possible the emergence of online
video and countless other applications, ultra high-speed bandwidth
will drive more innovation – in high-definition video, remote data
storage, real-time multimedia collaboration, and others that we
cannot yet imagine. Having this network will enable new consumer
applications, as well as medical, educational, and other services
that can benefit communities. If the Internet has taught us
anything, it's that the most important innovations are often those
we least expect.
What would this cost me?
Google has said this service will be
offered at a competitive price and operate under an "open access"
network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers.
Will getting chosen by Google as a
test community bring us jobs?
Yes, both directly and indirectly.
Building the added infrastructure
necessary to support the network will likely create construction
jobs. The secondary economic impact would likely be even more
important. Having the fastest internet connection in the world would
give our businesses an incredible edge in creating the inventions
and technological advances which then beget the jobs of tomorrow.
Why should we (folks in Orlando) want
this?
Because being selected by Google as a
“test city” is about much more than just being home to a lightning
fast internet connection. Having this fiber network in our community
would be a platform for creation and collaboration unlike any other
on earth. It would give you residents and businesses a unique tool
to turn dreams into reality.
Would our whole City (or all of
Central Florida) get access to this network?
Google has said they expect that to
provide this service to a minimum of 50,000 people and up to as many
as 500,000 people, most likely in multiple communities. The City of
Orlando and greater Central Florida has a number of areas that would
benefit greatly from this network (Downtown Orlando, the Medical
City at Lake Nona, the University of Central Florida, our
hospitality sector, to name a few). It will be up to Google to
determine if the whole City receives the connection or if this
connection would be done in segments.
How do we tell Google Orlando is the
place to be?
Google has asked that we do this in
two ways:
-
Formal Request for Information:
The City of Orlando is preparing a formal submission of
information that includes important technical information about
our City. The formal submission also includes information
detailing the characteristics of our location that make it
unique and that might appeal to Google when choosing a test
site. We will also include suggestions and examples from our
residents in the formal response.
-
Response from Residents and
Businesses: Google wants to hear directly from our residents and
businesses. They want to know what you or your company might be
able to accomplish with this kind of internet connection. Google
wants to hear you tell them why they should pick Orlando. What
sort of dreams could you turn into reality? They want people to
be creative! Google has said they want to see everything from
you tube videos… to artwork.
What’s the point of
www.GetGoogling.Com?
The City has created this web site as
a mechanism for YOU, our residents and businesses, to tell Google
that Orlando is the choice to be home to their network!
What do I need to do on
www.GetGoogling.Com?
The most important action you can
take is filling out the Google survey. Tell them what you could do
(or dream about doing or creating) with this internet connection.
If you want to do more, there are
plenty of options:
-
Get “mapped.” If you live, work
or visit Orlando take a moment to make your mark on our Google
Map by sharing why Orlando is where Google should build their
fiber network.
-
Get creative. Submit a You Tube
video or other creative “pitch” to encourage Google to Choose
Orlando.
-
Get others. Spread the word. Talk
about Get Googling on Buzz. Follow us on Twitter. Become a fan
of Get Googling Orlando on Facebook. Email Your friends.
Why isn’t the City doing more? What
are we offering as an incentive to attract Google?
Google isn’t looking for communities
to offer them specific incentives to build this network in their
communities. What they want is information.
Google wants to see what is unique
about Orlando. They want to know what strengths we possess that will
help us take full advantage of this incredible opportunity.
They don’t just want to hear from
elected officials or businesses leaders. They want to hear from
everybody! Google want to see what kind of widespread community
support an opportunity like this can generate.
How much time do I have to make my
“pitch” to Google?
Not much. Our City’s application is due
back to Google on March 26th.
Who can I email if I have additional questions or suggestions?
